MGN ON THE ROAD
Grand Rapids
We paid our respects to President Ford this week. We had been a visitor to his library a number of occasions and felt we wanted to be a part of his homecoming. For those that have not visited the Gerald Ford Museum and Library, make a note to do so, as it is a wonderful and calming experience. http://www.ford.utexas.edu/

Orlando
Let's face it, a journey to Florida has a little less snap to it, when you leave the type of mild winter we are experiencing, but there is still that rush, when you exit the airport into the warm Florida sunshine. Same time next week. Cheers.

PATTY BERG
I received a note from Elaine Crosby indicating some disappointment with our MGN Golf Necrology list last week, in that it did not include Patty Berg. While I was primarily trying to target golfers with a Michigan connection, I saw her point.

Berg, who was an LPGA founder, died on September 10 of last year at the age of 88. Besides being one of13 founders of the Ladies Professional Golf Association in 1950, she won 60 tournaments during her career, including a record 15 majors. She also was The Associated Press Athlete of the Year in 1938, 1943 and 1955.

Services were held in Fort Myers, with many past and present golf dignitaries attending, Elaine Crosby being among them. In a Naples News article by Greg Hardwig, here is what Crosby had to say.

"I remember we were watching Michigan when they won the national championship. She started picking on Brian Griese and giving me a hard time. I was a Michigan fan. She could tease you as well as anybody. That was typical of her, too, because she was such an armchair quarterback. She knew a lot about football and had her two cents."

And others:

Arnold Palmer
"She was one of the great ladies of golf. To lose her is a very sad thing. She never lost her enthusiasm. She was just a great gal and the contributions she made to the LPGA, well, there are just not many people who could have made the contributions that Patty Berg made. We're all very sorry for her passing."

Jack Nicklaus
"I first met and played golf with Patty Berg when I was 13 years old. I remember it vividly, because it also happened to be one of the most embarrassing days of my life. I played nine holes with her and I shot a 53. Here I was a plus-3 handicap and I shoot a 53 for nine holes. But it was also two days before I discovered I had polio (a mild case that was subsequently treated). Regardless, Patty could not have been nicer to me. She was terrific then, and has been a friend and supporter ever since. I always enjoyed watching Patty give her clinics. She was, simply, the best."

Betsy King
"I feel like I'm going to see Patty again when I get to heaven. When you have a day like today, it makes heaven seem so much more real. At least it does for me. She was a great speaker and entertainer who happened to play golf. I will remember her spirit and I'm thankful for what she did for the LPGA."

Jeanne Rubado
"We were having a (junior) clinic at The Forest. I wanted her to autograph some balls for the girls. Titleist had sent me a bunch of golf balls for the girls. The girls were going to get autographs. She said 'I can't autograph these balls.' (Berg would not autograph anything but a Wilson ball). The girls, they're little and they don't know. She sitting at the range, and she picks up the range balls. They were Wilson golf balls, so she starting autographing the range balls.Jim Butler was the GM then. I went in and I said 'I think I owe you for some of the range balls.' So we sent someone to the store to buy some Wilson balls."

Meg Mallon
"I was thinking (during the funeral) here's a person taking her life and maximizing it. She made the most of it. She affected so many people. And she lived her life in a way that all of us would dream about living."

JOHN ROBINSON PICKS UP SOME GD KUDOS
John Robinson, designer of Hawk's Eye and The Chief for Grant Rowe, picked up some kudos from GD and a quote from Ron Whitten for his newBlue Heron Golf Club in Medina, Ohio. The course won 2nd place for Best New Public Golf course in the USA under $75.00 green fee. Whitten said, "On the rugged topography of northeast Ohio, Blue Heron Golf Club makes no apologies for its steeplechase design from cliff top to cliff top over deep ravines." Robinson, is also working with "Grip it and Rip it" pro, John Daly in designing new courses.

BOB HOPE'S TOP 10 PRESIDENT FORD GOLF JOKES
We have had a somber week with the services of Gerald Ford, so.... we thought we would lighten things up with a little Hope.

"It's not hard to find Jerry Ford on a golf course -- you just follow the wounded."

"The last time I played golf with President Ford he hit a birdie and an eagle, a moose, an elk, an aardvark ..."

"Gerald Ford is the man who made golf a contact sport."

"You all know Jerry Ford -- the most dangerous driver since Ben Hur."

"Ford is easy to spot on the course. He drives the cart with the red cross painted on top."

"Whenever I play with him, I usually try to make it a foursome -- the President, myself, a paramedic and a faith healer."

"One of my most prized possession is the Purple Heart I received for all the golf I've played with him."

"Whenever I play with Ford these days I carry 13 clubs and a white flag".

"I try to win only enough from him to pay my extra insurance premiums."

"We got President Ford out here and this if very exciting. He had his secret service men out there selling bandages and iodine.

"We have 51 golf courses in Palm Springs. He never decides which course he will play until after the first tee shot."

And one from Gerald Ford

"Thank you very much, Doug, for that generous introduction. I am delighted to see so many old friends in today's audience. As you've already heard, between Betty's 80th birthday, our forthcoming 50th wedding anniversary, and my all too fast approaching 85th birthday this is a special year in the Ford household. When I learned that the National Press Club was celebrating its own 90th birthday, Betty said that I could come back this year - on condition that I not tell any of my golf jokes, which she says are older than any of us. Back when she first raised the subject a few years ago, I took the easy way out. I told her that I would stop telling golf jokes the day Washington balanced the federal budget."

SAY SOMETHING NICE ABOUT EMILY
Emily Gail, one of the original Detroit booster, that had t-shirts made up to "Say Something Nice About Detroit, now has her own golf radio and tv show on the Big Island. Emily, excelled in golf as a teenager in the Detroit area, and later tried to qualify for the Futures Tour.

Emily had many adventures while in Detroit. She was the originator of many running events in Detroit, once ran Death Valley, was a participant in the Ironman Triathlon and did a road rally around the perimeter of the U.S. In addition to her own fame, her brother Max, was a regular on the Barney Miller TV show in the late 70's and early 80's.
