19TH HOLE
Two guys drink in this bar every night. They stay in the corner on their own. No one else will talk to them as one has a big hump on his back and the other has a wooden leg. The guy with the hump on his back leaves early one night and takes a short cut through the graveyard.

Half way through his journey a ghost jumps out from behind a headstone and yells,

"What do you have on your back?"

"A hump." the startled man replies.

"Gimme it" says the ghost and grabs the hump off the man's back and flies off into the night.

The guy, now standing bolt upright for the first time in 30 odd years, heads back to the bar. He then proceeds to join all the other regulars for drinks.

After a while he goes over to his old mate with the wooden leg, who by now is sitting with his mouth wide open in amazement.

"Where the heck is your hump?" he asks.

The now hump-less guy tells him his tale of good fortune about taking the short cut through the graveyard.

With that, the wooden leg guy hops up as fast as he can and hops at full speed to the graveyard where he is met by the same ghost.

"What do you have on your back?" yells the ghost.

"Nothing" said hoppy.

"Well here's a hump for you" said the ghost placing it nicely on hoppy's back before flying off into the night.

BOOK REVIEW-JIMMY DEMARET: THE SWINGS THE THING
The latest from Clock Tower Press, "Jimmy Demaret: The Swings the Thing", has few demerits as a golf book. It is another fast and entertaining read from the folks at Clock Tower Press. Scheduled for release this year, the book highlights the plethora of highlights in one of golf's flashier players. Demaret was a bit like Hagen, but only in Technicolor. He of bright pants and deft chips shots brought the golf world a little something different. Can you say pastel?

A bonus for Michigan readers is Demaret's ties to the state. He was a former pro at Plum Hollow and he brought both Bob Hope and Bing Crosby to town for matches. On May,1942 Bob Hope and Walter Hagen took on Demaret and Mayor Ed Jeffries and beat them 2 up. In September, he paired up with Bing Crosby and lost to Chick Harbert and Bryon Nelson. He also helped to bring the 1947 PGA Championship to Plum Hollow. Demaret participated in some charity Ryder Cup events at Oakland Hills and Detroit Golf Club that involved his mentor Walter Hagen.

"In Reminiscing about his early days on tour, Demaret recalled the influence that Walter Hagen had on him. ' I'll admit I tried to be like him,' said Demaret. ' He was a very natty dresser, although they didn't have colors then. I remember seeing him drive up in a limousine, get out and go to the tee. We had some time together right at the end of his career. Walter and I did a little partying together."

Author John Companiotte also collaborated with Dr. Catherine Lewis to write the "PGA Championship: The Season's Final Major", for Clock Tower Press. This book will also be out later this year. Both books are from Clock Tower Press.

AMERICAN INVESTORS PUT JAPAN'S RESORT IN PLAY
In an article in Tuesday's, January 6,2004 New York Times, James Brooke pointed out that American companies, Goldman Sachs Group and Lone Star and have bought more than a hundred Japan golf courses of late. Since 2000, 265 courses have gone bankrupt in Japan.

NOTE FROM NERBONNE
Hey, Art.

I hope your holidays were fantastic. A quick note in regard to the "Who's skiing on our golf courses?" segment of your latest Michigan Golf News. At The Homestead, we literally do ski on our golf course. With our Mountain Flowers Par 3 golf course occupying many of the bluffs and valleys adjacent to Lake Michigan, it only makes sense that the significant elevation between tee and green be utilized for winter fun! As a result, 7 of our 9 holes are covered with snow each November & December and enjoyed by skiers and snowboarders until mid-March╩when our grounds crew begins preparing them for golf in May. The dual-use of this beautiful land is not easy, but the benefits are obvious to our skiers and golfers alike.

Happy New Year!

MICHIGAN.ORG HITS IT BIG
Michigan.org reports record visitor numbers: Travel Michigan reported Tuesday that the number of Web surfers looking for Michigan travel information at www.michigan.org increased dramatically in 2003. Inquiries in 2003 to the state's official web site for tourism information rose 83.2 percent from╩ 2002, to 4.08 million Web user sessions. That's up from 2.23 million the previous year and 1.46 million in 2001. The agency also said 50.9 percent of michigan.org users were Michigan residents, while 49.1 percent inquired from out-of-state markets. The top markets outside Michigan: Chicago, Indianapolis and Cleveland. "We certainly view this as a positive indicator for leisure travel in Michigan," said George Zimmermann, interim COO for the Michigan Economic Development Corp. and vice president of Travel Michigan. "We know from independent research that 67 percent of consumers who use michigan.org for tourism information then travel to and within Michigan." Officials also said users clicked through from michigan.org to private Web sites 2.34 million times during the year. It was the first time clickthroughs had been recorded.

SPIM
First spam, now 'spim:' The number of unwanted messages being received through instant messaging clients reached 500 million this year, according Ferris Research, a consulting firm. The advertisements and come-ons can be more annoying that spam, because IMs pop-up on a user's screen, while e-mail builds up in the background. America Online, Yahoo (YHOO) and Microsoft (MSFT) have each included options in their IM software that can block must unwanted messages. Users can set their preferences for program use to receive messages only from people on their buddy list.

LPGA -TIP OF THE WEEK
Developing an efficient pre-shot routine-
Develop a routine and stick to it. Your pre-shot routine should guarantee that your setup check list is complete. Do all your thinking behind the ball. Once you set up to the ball, stay committed to the shot and the club you have chosen. Focus on the target and trust your swing. Too much analysis will lead to paralysis.
This week's tip courtesy of Krista Dunton, Forsgate Country Club, Jamesburg, NJ

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"I am a millionaire today and my wife deserves all of the credit. Before I met her I was a multi-millionaire."
Chi Chi Rodriquez

CORRECTION
Last week I forgot to credit our 19th Hole joke. We picked it off of http://www.funny.co.uk

A guy falls asleep on the beach for several hours and gets a severe sunburn. He goes to the hospital and is promptly admitted with second-degree burns. He was already starting to blister and in agony. The doctor prescribed continuous intravenous feeding with saline and electrolytes, a sedative and a Viagra pill every four hours. The nurse, somewhat surprised said, "What good will the Viagra do him?" "It'll keep the sheets off his legs," replied the doctor.
