MICHIGAN GOLF SHOW
The biggest consumer golf show in America opens its doors today at the Rock Financial Showcase in Novi. Laurie McCann indicates that they have added a few new wrinkles to make the show more compelling for show goers this year. They have added a second sit down bar to the show floor, a very popular addition last year, and will be offering free pancakes for attendees and exhibitors from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. on Sunday. The Osprey Group is a new show sponsor this year, joining other sponsors Metro Detroit Buick Dealers, Boyne Country Sports and Crystal Mountain.
Over 300,000 square feet and 450 exhibitors will be on hand with everything imaginable in golf. Show times are 2-9 on Friday, 9-8 on Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday. Be there or be square.

MICHIGAN GOLFER ON THE ROAD
Gaylord-Treetops-The Amazing Race
Kevin McKinley, Mike Fernandez and Tish Jankowski of Treetops provided some winter fun this past week, with their version of The Amazing Race. As golf properties continue to explore additional revenue streams by showcasing and presenting their facilities to other markets, they continue to come up with interesting ideas. Golf properties are now used for weddings, concerts and now Amazing Races.
McKinley offered up his third edition of the Amazing Race, much to the delight of new GM, Mike Fernandez. They had 12 four-person teams competing for prizes and they all seemed to enjoy the experience.. The Treetops version of the Amazing Race is now on our sister channel, Michigan Skier Television http://michigangolfer.tv/miskier/season_6/amazingrace/ Enjoy.
Mike Biber, CEO of Osprey SA and the emerging Osprey Recreational Properties unit of the company, was a guest speaker at my Eastern Michigan University Sports and Event Marketing class this week. The hard charging executive got some nice reviews from the business students in the class. His remarks centered around the management challenges he found within the firm and how he motivates the 50 or so managers that report to him. Based in Brighton, Osprey SA manages properties in the Carolinas, Florida, Texas and Michigan. Their golf properties include The Medalist,Black Forest, Canthooke Valley, Cutter's Ridge, Ridgeview,The Tribute, The Classic and Wilderness Valley.

PEGGY KIRK BELL TO RECEIVE2007 PGA FIRST LADY OF GOLF AWARD
LPGA Charter Member Peggy Kirk Bell, a pioneer in the development of the modern golf school and one of America¹s foremost golf instructors, has been named recipient of the 2007 PGA First Lady of Golf Award.
A native of Findlay, Ohio, Bell will be honored on May 23, 2007, in a 7 p.m. EDT ceremony at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island (S.C.) Golf Resort. The Award presentation will be held in conjunction with the 68th Senior PGA Championship, May 24-27, 2007, on the famous Ocean Course at Kiawah Island.
Bell, 85, is the owner of Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club and Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club, both in Southern Pines, N.C. Bell and her late husband, Warren ³Bullet² Bell purchased the then-Pine Needles Golf Course in 1953, a site that will host its third U.S. Women¹s Open, June 25-July 1, 2007.
³Peggy Kirk Bell embodies the word giver¹ when it comes to devoting one¹s life to the betterment of others in golf,² said PGA of America President Brian Whitcomb. ³Peggy¹s career was inspired by such legends as Glenna Collett Vare, a premier player, and Patty Berg, the game¹s preeminent ambassador. And, by their example, Peggy elevated herself and developed the golf school concept into an industry that has extended the careers of teaching professionals and introduced golf to thousands who would otherwise not take the time to learn to play this great game. The PGA of America is very proud to present Peggy with the PGA First Lady of Golf Award.²
Born Peggy Kirk, the daughter of Bob and Grace Kirk of Findlay, Ohio, she began playing golf at age 17. Peggy attended Boston University¹s Sargent College of Physical Education (1939-41), and graduated with a degree in education from Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., in 1943.
She became one of the finest amateur players in Ohio, where she went on to win three-consecutive Ohio Women¹s Amateur Championships (1947-49); the 1949 North and South Women¹s Championship; and the 1949 Titleholders Championship (an event that is listed as a former LPGA major Championship). Bell competed on the victorious 1950 Curtis Cup Team, which was captained by Vare, a five-time National Champion.
Bell teamed with Babe Didrikson Zaharias to win the 1947 International Four-Ball. In 1950, Bell turned professional and became a charter member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association.
³It is a tremendous honor to be recipient of this Award,² said Bell. ³I think about those who have gone before me, including Patty Berg, and I feel very fortunate. The PGA of America is the backbone of the game. They are the teachers of golf and guardians for its welfare.²
Throughout her career as a player and resort owner, Bell has been a tireless contributor to the game of golf. She has been the recipient of numerous major awards including: the 1990 USGA Bob Jones Award, 1993 Golf Writers Association of America¹s William Richardson Award, the LPGA¹s 1989 Ellen Griffin Rolex Award, 1981 National Golf Foundation¹s Joe Graffis Award and the 1995 National Golf Course Owners Order of Merit. Honored at the 1998 Memorial Tournament, she is a member of the Jack Nicklaus Captain¹s Club.
The PGA First Lady of Golf Award, inaugurated in 1998, is presented to a woman who has made significant contributions to the promotion of the game of golf.

A man/woman was at the country club for his weekly round of golf. She/He began his/herround with an eagle on the first hole and a birdie on the second. On thethird hole he/she had just scored his/her first ever hole-in-one when his/her cellphone rang.
It was a doctor notifying him/her that his/her wife/husband had just been in a terrible
accident and was in critical condition and in the ICU.
The man/woman told the doctor to inform his/her wife/husband where he/she was and that thehe'd/she'd be there as soon as possible. As he/she hung up he/she realized he/she wasleaving what was shaping up to be his/her best ever round of golf. He/Shedecided to get in a couple of more holes before heading to the hospital.He/she ended up playing all eighteen, finishing his/her round shooting apersonal best 61, shattering the club record by five strokes and beatinghis/her previous best game by more than 10. He was jubilant.... then he/sheremembered his/her wife/husband.
Feeling guilty he/she dashed to the hospital. He/She saw the doctor in thecorridor and asked about his/her wife's/husband's condition.
The doctor glared at him/her and shouted, "You went ahead and finished yourround of golf didn't you!
"I hope you're proud of yourself! While you were out for the past fourhours enjoying yourself at the country club your wife/husband has beenlanguishing in the ICU! It's just as well you went ahead and finishedthat round because it will be more than likely your last! For the restof her/his life she/he will require 'round the clock care. And you'll be her/hiscare giver!"
The man/woman was feeling so guilty he/she broke down and sobbed. The doctorsnickered and said, "Just messing with you. She's/He's dead. What'd youshoot?
For those of you who have followed the career of our son Michael, let this serve as an FYI to his latest commercial for Mastercard. The commercial "Elephant" http://www.priceless.com/pricelesstv/ debuted on the Oscars. This commercial is on the heels of the Dodge Nitro commercial that debuted on the World Series http://phyzblog.blogspot.com/2006/10/dodge-nitro-tv-ad.html. McCafferty, playing "The Haig" paired up with our host Bill Shelton to bring our viewers the history of the Ryder Cup.
The commercial also means that he will not be writing home for money again this year. Cheers.
