HAVE A GREAT 4TH OF JULY, FROM THE ENTIRE STAFF OF MGN

Okay, so we don't have an entire staff. However, if we did, we would all wish you to hit 'em straight and avoid any three putts.

***
UPPER PENINSULA GOLF ASSOCIATION IS A NEW ASSOCIATION SUBSCRIBER TO
MICHIGAN GOLF NEWS

MGN welcomes the members of the Upper Peninsula Golf Association to our weekly newsletter. The association represents 55, 18 and 9 hole golf courses in the Upper Peninsula, Northern Wisconsin and Ontario, Canada. Frank Guastella, one of the association officers, indicated that the association wants to continue to develop stronger communication and economic ties with the lower peninsula as well as northern Wisconsin and Northern Ontario. You can check out their new website http://upga.org

MGN ON THE ROAD

Escanaba-The Highlands CC and Terrace Bluff GC While on our way to the IM Golf Classic, we dropped by Escanaba to catch up on the news at Terrace Bluffs and The Highlands. Both counters were backed up with golfers waving money for tee times, so we did not stay long. Terrace Bluff offers golfers great value and a spectacular view of Little Bay de Noc. The Highlands CC looked to be in terrific shape. http://www.travelbaysdenoc.com/golf.html

Gwinn-Red Fox Run

Frank Gustella, owner and PGA professional at Red Fox Run, indicated they were up over a 1000 rounds for the year. In addition, he indicated that their Junior Golf program had over 120 students in it. Frank and his partner, Bill Roberts, former President of the Golf Course Superintendents Association, have turned their focus to the golf course, after having created the Red Fox Inn lodging and restaurant facility. http://redfoxrun.com

Iron Mountain- Timberstone GC and Pine Grove CC

The headlines in most Upper Peninsula sports pages carried the smiling faces of MSU's Tom Izzo and the Detroit Lions Steve Mariucci. They were in their home town to dedicate the new training facility they have donated to their alma mater, Iron Mountain High School.

This is one of the hottest tournaments in the UP and tickets are hard to come by. They usually raise a ton of money, this year take being over $285,000. The one day tournament took place on the awesome Timberstone GC and the venerable Pine Grove CC. Pine Grove, now in its second century, has a new clubhouse and it is a dandy. We had a chance to catch the action and will bring it to you later this month on Michigan Golfer TV.
http://imgolfclassic.com

Kewadin-A-Ga-Ming

The new A-Ga-Ming golf course http://a-ga-ming.com/newcourse.gif is taking shape and well on the way to its opening in 2004. You can see the construction as you approach the clubhouse. Jerry Matthews, course designer, will add to his legacy with the Torch course at A-Ga-Ming.

Real estate is an important part of the Torch course of A-Ga-Ming and they should be able to close a lot of deals if they take them up to the clubhouse to sign the papers. There are golf views of equal brilliance in Michigan, but none better. The perfect "Sip and Chip" program, would be between A-Ga-Ming and Chateau Chantal on the Old Mission Peninsula.

Traverse City-Grand Traverse Resort, Elmbrook GC

One of the great views in golf, is watching the Grand Traverse Bay light up with the morning sun while high atop the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa's Tower. Yes, golf writers are occasionally tossed a bone with a lot of meat on it. This is a time when the golf press lives in high cotton. Thanks to Mike DeAgostino and all the fine folks at GTR for a great tournament. Also on hand to keep things moving along was Tim Hygh, WJR representative and press room grand llama. http://grandtraverseresort.com

Dave Krause, committee member of The Haig Grand Traverse Heritage Center Golf Tournament, indicated that everyone one thought the tournament was a great success. John and Carolyn Olson, owners of the course, were heavily involved in the planning and execution of the tournament.

St. Ignace-St.Ignace GC

The St. Ignace course looked dazzling in a morning sun as vintage cars drove by her fairways. Golf took the rumble seat to the 26th Annual Straits Area Antique Auto Show that was in town. This is a great event. Golfers can pick up some rounds in St. Ignace or Mackinac Island and then pull up a chair at their motel and watch all these great cars cruise the city. Great time.

MICHIGAN GOLFER TELEVISION VISITS CANADIAN COURSES

Our host Bill Shelton, had the opportunity to catch up with a number of our Canadian friends and chat about their golf courses. Tune in to Bill as he chats with representatives of Forest Golf and Country Hotel, near Sarnia, Monterra Golf at Blue Mountain Resort in Collingwood and Crimson Ridge in Sault Ste Marie.

AN APPEAL FROM BILL FOUNTAIN OF THE MAJESTIC

Two Hartland students, Jamie and Lisa Hearn (12 and 10 years old) lost their father to cancer on May 10. Immediately following the funeral, their mother, Laura, took Lisa to the hospital because she had collapsed during the funeral. That night they discovered that 10-year old Lisa has Hepatoblastoma Liver Cancer! There are many hardships these three ladies now face since their father/husband is gone, but the battle of cancer once again is challenging.

HERE IS WHERE YOU CAN HELP!

We are having a raffle to benefit Lisa's educational and medical expenses. We are selling 1000 tickets for 1000 golf balls at $25 a piece (raising $25,000). The golf balls will be numbered 1-1000. On August 9, at 5:30 pm, the golf balls will be dropped out of a helicopter on the Majestic Golf Course driving range and the 5 closest balls to the target will each win $1,000. (You do not need to be present to win.) The remaining $20,000 will go to the Hearns.

The cost is $25/ticket (your ticket number will be with the corresponding ball number). For ticket information contact the Majestic majestic@ismi.net

Thank you, Bill Fountain

*** KERNICKI RETURNS TO MICHIGAN AT TRUE NORTH

Michael Kernicki, a former president of the Michigan Section of the PGA of America and a longtime director of that organization's national board, has returned to Harbor Springs to develop the membership programs at True North. After a two-year stint as the general manager of The Golf Club of Georgia, Kernicki is back in his home state, where he spent two decades in director of golf positions at Bloomfield Hills Country Club near Detroit, and the Wuskowhan Players Club near Holland. Prior to those postings, he was the head golf professional at Birchwood Farms Golf & Country Club in Harbor Springs, just a few miles away from True North.

"I missed Michigan the minute I left," said Kernicki. "I would get back from time to time, but I am excited to be in the state that has always been my home. It is an honor to return to this beautiful area and to be able to use my skills to help the owners build the membership at True North," said Kernicki.
