MGN ON THE ROAD
Benton Harbor-Point O' Woods and the Western Amateur Point O' Woods hosted a media day, in preparation for the upcoming 102nd Western Amateur being held there. It is always a treat to step on to a Robert Trent Jones course and our outing was no exception. The major news coming out of the status of this venerable course. Straight line winds of over 100 miles per hour hit the course accompanied by a tornado that corkscrewed and smashed over 200 trees of the Point O' Woods forest inventory.
The course was shut down for the week and a team of workers and tree removal specialists headed up by course superintendent Ron Fox, has rid the course of the carnage and prepared it for the upcoming tournament. Holes 9, 12 and 13 were especially impacted, in that strategic trees that protected par on these holes are only a photographic memory.
Dennis Mitchell, Tournament Chairman, was generous with his praise of the Point O' Woods ground crew and indicated that the whole story will be chronicled by Kelly Hill in the tournament program.
In addition, to the news from damage control center, Mitchell, also spoke about their new green complex at No.2, the addition of two more bunkers and new sand that will be less punitive for the golfers.
Gary Holaway, Publicist for WGA, also announced that TaylorMade-adidas Golf will be a presenting sponsor of the tournament.
For highlights of last year's tournament, you can go to our Michigan Golfer Television site and catch the action. http://michigangolfer.tv/2003shows/show20/index.html
The Storm -An excerpt from an upcoming article in the Western Amateur Program
By: Kelly Hill
"Ron Fox took one look at the southwest sky and knew it meant trouble.Fox, the course superintendent at Point O' Woods Golf and Country Club, had no idea, though, just how much trouble was coming.
Trouble stormed into Point O' Woods at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 21. It was an unusual time of the day for a spring storm in Michigan, but also a time when the golf course was littered with playing members and working staffers.
"The sky was an unbelievable color," Fox recalls. "It was gun-metal black. To the southwest, the sky was that incredible color: gun-metal black. "The wind came first," Fox continued, reliving that morning. "The lightning and the rain came last." When the wind came, it came hard. And it continued for more than 20 minutes. The lightning and rain followed a path of destruction across the golf course at Point O' Woods.
"The official forecast called for straight-line winds," Fox said. "If you follow the coast to the north, though, there was a definite path as it continued up the (Lake Michigan) coast. "There were members all over the golf course who were literally running for their lives. One member reported seeing a funnel cloud on the 18th green. One member was out with guests and they were driving down the cart path on 16 and trees were falling all around them."
Dearborn-Ford Senior Players Championship
Be there or be square, as the Senior Players Championship begins its second round of golf this morning. Don't forget the grand finale and the concert by Hootie and the Blowfish after the presentation ceremony.
It was nice seeing Barry Godwin in TC. Barry, formerly marketing director at Shanty Creek, is currently the CEO of his own firm and specializes in Marketing and Public Relations.
John and Carol Olson, said that their second Hickory Club Tournament at Elmbrook was very successful and a third is planned for June 17, next year. They also joined others that had swarmed around Dave Richard's car to hear the latest Kid Rock album. Their son plays guitar for Kid Rock. "He was a beginning golfer, until he picked up a guitar one day, and then golf was forgotten," say an extremely perplexed and proud father, John Olson.

MICHIGAN GOLF HISTORY BUFFS-HELP NEEDED
I was told many years ago by my grandfather (I am 63) that there use to be a golf course in The St. Johns Marsh just south of Algonac and north of Fair Haven. I remember seeing what was left of the club house at one time. How might I find out if this is true and get some facts? Hope someone can advise what I should do to get this information.
Can anyone help Bob? Thanks

Uphill lie (shot tends to fly high and short) Position the ball even with the higher (front) foot, tilt your body to match the grade of the hill, and swing along the slope. Use a less-lofted club than normal to lower the trajectory of the shot.
Downhill lie (shot tends to fly low and long) Position the ball even with the higher (back) foot, align your body to the angle of the hill and swing along the slope. Use a more lofted club than normal to get the ball in the air.
Ball above your feet (shot tends to go left) Stand farther from the ball, and set your weight over the balls of your feet. Take a less-lofted club to reduce the amount of curve. Aim slightly right of the target.
Ball below your feet (shot tends to go right) Grip at the end of the club, stand closer to the ball and place your weight back on your heels. Take a more lofted club to reduce the amount of slice and to help get the ball airborne. Aim left of the target.
