We stopped by Boyne Mountain to see what progress has been made on
their new H2O Waterpark hotel. There is a new sign for the hotel, but the work
stoppage is still apparent. There a new real estate development over
by the Top Notch and Superbowl chairs. Of special note was the 50-60
single engine planes that were at their tie downs at the Boyne airport.
We were the guest of Peter Fitzsimons, Director of the Boyne, Harbor
Springs and Petoskey CVB, while in town to tape the Little Traverse Bay
U Outta Regatta and had a chance to catch up with some of the golf news
in the area. This taken from the Guide put out by the Petoskey News-

MUSKOKA , CANADA
Muskoka Golf Trail. An Ultimate Golf Vacation!
If you are looking for an exciting golf destination, The Moskoka Golf
Trail should be at the top of the list. Just two hours north of Toronto are
some of the very finest golf courses you will find anywhere, and the dining
and lodging is equally outstanding.
We began with a stay at the Deerhurst Resort where Brenda MacPhee and
Brent Lavers took the time to fill us in on what their 400-room facility has
to offer. Quite simply, everything! From two great courses - Highlands
and Lakeside - to a full-blown after dinner musical production, Deerhurst
lives up to its very catchy motto, " One visit, and you 'll never resort to
anything less. "
We then moved on to meet with Tracy Ford of Delta Muskoka Resorts. She is equally enthusiastic about what her three properties have to offer:
excellent lodging and dining at the Grandview, Sherwood and Rocky Crest
coupled with two beautiful, well groomed championship courses,
including a Mark O'Meara design. It was hard to leave our stay at Rocky Crest, a
most comfortable full-service resort situated on the banks of crystal-clear
A short drive south near Gravenhurst is one of the finest resorts in
Canada with the unlikely name "Taboo." Here we found five-star lodging and
dining along with the home course of Canada's pride and joy, Mike Weir. Golf
Professional Greg Cupido is most proud of his course and frankly he has
every right to be, because it is excellent on all counts.
Also on Lake Joseph is a private club that extends courtesy only to
those staying at Muskoka Golf Trail resorts. Greg McMillan did a fine job in
showing us why this course is an important part of the Clublink chain.
Just up the road is an all-new Nick Faldo design slated to open next
spring. Director of Operations Kevin O'Donnell gave us an extended cart
tour and this is definitely a course that will be receiving tons of
accolades. Pre-Cambrian rock is prominent throughout the Muskoka region
and when you play the "Rock" you will quickly discover where the name
Many thanks to Carolyn Purcell and Robert Warrington of Ultimate Golf
Vacations who took excellent care in putting this wonderful journey
together. They didn 't miss a beat!

THE HAIG VISITS CADILLAC
Walter Hagen had the opportunity to stop by one of his old haunts a
month ago, as he visited Pilgrim's Village. It was here that The Haig spent
many a wonderful summer away from the crowded and busy world of suburban
Detroit. It was also here that he penned his biography, "The Walter
Hagen Story". Join our host Bill Shelton, "The Haig" and guests Steve
Knaisel, Ron Anderson and Carol Potter from Cadillac as they recall their
remembrances of Walter Hagen.

Sports, taken together, are still America's favorite activity, topping
entertainment activities by 52% to 48% in 2002, according to the
LeisureTRAK report. The popularity of sport and recreational activities
has declined from 63% in 1993 but has been rising since dropping to 49% in
1999. Sports and recreation achieved a favorite-activity level of 56%
in 2001, which was the highest since 1997.
Fitness sports bucked the overall downward trend. At 30%, fitness as a
favorite activity in 2002 equaled its highest level of the past 10
years. While many sports lost popularity in 2002, fitness sports gained. The
popularity of exercising, for example, reached a nine-year high in
2002. Also in 2002, 5% of all American reported having gone to a health club
or spa in the past three months, up from 2% of all Americans in 1998.
Team sports have endured a steep decline in the past 10 years - from
favorite status with 11% in 1993, falling to 3% in 2002.
The LeisureTRAKÆ Report, produced by the Leisure Trends Group, Boulder, Colo., is based on a quarterly poll of 1,000 American adults age
16-older, with results projectable to the U.S. population. Additional data from
the LeisureTRAK survey can be found at http://www.leisuretrends.com. For
more information, call (888) 732-7373.
