Of note, is the almost daily coverage by the New York Times and the Detroit Free Press. This past Sunday over a thousand people turned out for the funeral held in East Jordan. Jennie McCafferty was covering the race for The Michigan Runner and was on hand for the race and even videotaped the ambulance that was ushered onto the course for the stricken Shay. You will find the coverage of the race and an earlier interview of Ryan Shay on our website.http://michiganrunner.tv/2007marathontrials_men/ ------- Harris-Sweetgrass This morning I will be visiting the new Sweetgrass Golf Course at the Island Resort and Casino. The course is scheduled to open next year. The architects for the course are Albanese and Lutzke. We will bring you further information on the course next week. Much has happened to this resort since last I visited. They have built a new and larger hotel which includes a show room, where Michael Bolton will be performing tonight, a new conference and convention center and an expanded gaming room. This facility rivals that of the hotel and complex of the Sault Ste. Marie complex put up by the Sault Indian Tribe. This is really a big time facility. http://islandresortandcasino.com ----- Gaylord The phone in the Baymont Motel in Gaylord began to ring at 5:30 in the morning with people wanting to know how much snow was on the ground. Gaylord, America's Summer Golf Mecca, quickly switches over to Michigan's Snowmobile capital in the winter. Gaylord lies in a snowbelt and usually gets its share during the winter season. The town is surrounded by hundreds of miles of groomed trails and golf destinations like Marsh Ridge and to some extent Garland, The weather for this past golf season was terrific and let us hope that the "white gold" will be just as plentiful this year. Check out our newGAYLORD TELEVISION NETWORK for snowmobile and ski videos http://youtube.com/results?search_query=GAYLORD+television+network&search=Search ----- Lewiston-Garland Andrew Wood, a national golf marketing guru, held court this past weekend at Garland. Wood and his Legendary Marketing company have become a major golf marketing firm the past couple of years and have picked up a number of Michigan clients, such as Garland, The Osprey Management group and St. Ives Resort.Wood also headlined the MGCOA conference last year. Garland has been a client of Legendary Marketing for the past three year's and according to the resort's leadership, their impact has been substantial. Garland is up in most revenue categories, in what we all know is a very challenging economy. Their website really as all the information you need, if you are interested in their services. http://www.lmgmc.com/ Garland is midway to 60 years of providing top notch recreation for Michigan residents. We thought we would put a show we did with them about five years ago, when they were celebrating their 50th year. She supplied two links for those that would like to find out more about this very tragic event. http://www.cadillacnews.com/articles/2007/10/30/news/news01.txt http://www.mlive.com/news/grpress/index.ssf?/base/news-38/1193770584172490.xml&coll=6 ======================================= GOLF THOUGHTS ON THE BIG TEN NETWORK By Terry Moore ======================================= The battle between the big cable carriers (Comcast and Charter) and the Big Ten Conference over the Big Ten Network (BTN) has a familiar ring or, should I say test pattern, to it. The hubbub is the standstill in negotiations between the cable companies and the Big Ten on carrying the fledging BTN, a new 24/7 sports and college network exclusive to Big Ten content. Currently in Michigan if you want to watch the BTN you better have one of the major satellite hook-ups like Dish or DirecTV; or else you head to your favorite sports bar which has satellite. The BTN is a creation between the 11 universities in the Big Ten and Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News Corp. Its goal is to become the Big Ten equivalent of ESPN (or at least ESPN2) and it’s demanding corresponding subscriber fees which the cable companies feel are too high for basic cable customers. The BTN wants $1.10 per subscriber which, according to Comcast, is second only to ESPN in terms of fees. In fact, the BTN fee is 35 cents higher than even the NFL Network which is similarly seeking a basic cable tier. Comcast’s position is to carry the BTN only on a special subscriber tier that costs more money than basic cable but for only those designated customers. In other words, those subscribers’ higher monthly payments help “underwrite” the carriage costs associated with BTN. All of this seems vaguely reminiscent. Remember when The Golf Channel was trying to gain traction and access on the major cable channels? In its early days, it was harder to find than John Daly’s belt buckle. Like the BTN, it was relegated to a special and more expensive subscriber tier and rarely assigned to basic cable. As a result, TGC struggled mightily to find an audience and loyal advertisers. In truth, it wasn’t going anywhere. Then someone at TGC recalled the adage of “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” Soon after TGC and Comcast became business partners (nowadays, TGC is almost entirely owned by Comcast) and suddenly TGC was appearing as part of the basic cable package. Hence a new golf mega-media outlet was truly born. What’s the lesson here for the BTN? Well, I say either lower your subscriber fee demand or find a way, as did the The Golf Channel, to make Comcast a partner in the enterprise. Since the former avenue is a doubtful recourse given Mr. Murdoch’s stake in the BTN, the best bet is a more modest subscriber fee coupled with more aggressive advertising sales to make up the difference. Incidentally, I was at a function recently in which the University of Michigan’s President Mary Sue Coleman was asked about the BTN. Skirting the carriage issue (and really it’s out of her hands), Coleman mentioned that in addition to the hotly debated sports programming the BTN will also carry general interest programs from various universities including one from Michigan. Hmmm. Maybe UM’s highly ranked Stephen M. Ross School of Business should devote a one-hour special on “Forging Sports and Information Media Partnerships in the Cable Industry.” ======================================== CRAINS OFFERS NEW GOLF OUTING SERVICE ======================================== Crain's New Golf Event Guideinvites you to play in a tournament, promote your upcoming tournament or find a great place for your next event. http://www.golfeventguide.com/detroit/Default.aspx =============================== USGA AND PEER REVIEW OF SCORES BYTerry Moore =============================== As a postscript to my item a few Fridays ago about fired Merrill Lynch CEO Stan O’Neal whose summer golf scores, during the subprime meltdown, were “outed” by those accessing the open USGA peer review of scores record, it should be noted that the USGA made a policy change last June on this subject. Starting next year, the name of the course and the day of the month on which posted rounds were played will not be part of the records available to the general public. Only fellow members of a golfer’s club or course and the competition committee at any venue where a golfer intends to compete will be able to see the complete record. As such, only your fellow members can play a “dirty trick” on you with your boss or board members. ====================================== SIERRA CLUB TO HONOR CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN ===================================== The Michigan Chapter of the Sierra Club will honor Crystal Mountain for its commitment to the environment during an awards presentation at the resort, Monday, November 19 at 11:00am. The Sierra Club will present Crystal with the White Pine Award, given to a non-member group or organization that has shown extraordinary dedication to protection of the environment. The Traverse Group of the Sierra Club, one of ten active groups in the state, nominated Crystal for the honor which is voted upon by the state’s Executive Committee. “We feel Crystal Mountain is setting the standard for other resorts to follow and are truly impressed and grateful for their commitment to the environment,” said Monica Evans, chairperson of the Traverse Group of the Sierra Club. One of Crystal Mountain’s core values is to serve as a good steward of the environment. For a second straight winter the resort will purchase enough wind energy credits to power its high-speed quad chairlift, the Crystal Clipper. As a member of Green Lodging Michigan, Crystal has been recognized for instituting environmentally friendly practices in day-to-day operations. Most recently, Crystal began a resort-wide, in-room recycling program allowing guests to help recycle paper, plastic, glass, and metal items. Taken and edited from a PR release byBrian Lawson ============ CORRECTION ============ Last week, I indicated that Free Press golf writer, Carlos Monarrez "broke" the story about Indianwood being awarded the 2012 Senior Open. Theuse of the word "broke" was incorrect and was a disservice to not only Monarrez who was simply reporting the official announcement that Inverness and Indianwood were being awarded the Senior Open, but to other writers who had been following and commenting on the story. The earliest mention of the story that I can find through a Google search is the one that Dave Hackenberg wrote in the March 7th issue of the Toledo Blade "Inverness Club, which is gearing up to host the 2009 NCAA Division I golf championship, is expected to be awarded a second U.S. Senior Open by the United States Golf Association. Inverness and Indianwood Golf and Country Club, located north of Detroit in Lake Orion, Mich., are believed to be the two finalists for the 2011 Senior Open. However, a source familiar with negotiations between the USGA and Indianwood told The Blade that Inverness Club would likely be awarded the 2011 tournament with Indianwood in line to stage the same event in 2012 or later." More:http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070307/SPORTS05/703070376 A Tip of the Tam to a number of fellow members of the GWAA for pointing out my mistake. Cheers. Art McCafferty =========================== SEPTEMBER GOLF ROUNDS UP =========================== After falling 2.7% in August, September rounds played rose 4.4%. Better weather was the primary cause, according to the National Golf Foundation. Year-to-date rounds were virtually unchanged (-0.2%) through September. With only about 16% of annual rounds played volume to come in the remaining three months of the year, NGF doesn_t expect the year-to-date number to change significantly for the remainder of 2007. The reporting is based on data from operators at more than 1,800 golf facilities. For the full year 2006, rounds played were up 0.8%. The Mid-Atlantic, Upper Midwest and Northeast registered the best August performances regionally. The Mid-Atlantic rose 14.3%; the Upper Midwest and Northeast, each 9.5%. The Gulf Coast (down 6.1%) and Southwest (down 6.0%) had the poorest September showings. Of the 11 regions surveyed, six showed year-to-date declines. The South Central region had the steepest decline, down 7.8%. The Gulf Coast region trailed, down 4.6%. The Northeast region showed the strongest increase, up 3.3%. All other regions fell in the +/-2% range. For the nine months, play at value courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart below $40), was down 0.4%. At premium public courses (those with peak season weekend green fees with cart above $70), rounds played have risen 0.7%. At standard courses ($40-70), play was also up 0.7%. Overall, rounds played at all public courses rose 0.1% year-to-date. Private courses didn_t do quite as well, with rounds played for the nine months slipping 1.3%. According to Golf Datatech, rounds wereup 4.6% in September 2007 compared toSeptember 2006 and areup 0.1%year to date. The report includes3,575 reporting courses. Cheers. http://michigangolfer.tv/2007shows/jackberry/ ***** French Lick Resort and Casino with Dave Harner French Lick Resort and Casino has recaptured its past grandeur with the aid of about 400 million bucks. French Lick has been around for more than a century, as a health spa, golf resort and gaming center. High powered personalities of the 30's and 40's visited the area for gaming and golf. Resort guests included, Bing Crosby, Joe Louis, George Jessel, Lana Turner, Howard Hughes, Franklin D. Roosevelt and John Barrymore. However, once owner Tom Taggart lost the battle to keep the illegal gaming ongoing, the gaming in French Lick ceased. Tough times hit the valley, with only the success of Larry Bird, the Hick from French Lick, keeping the area in the spotlight. With recent legislation, gaming has returned to the valley and along with it lots of jobs. Dave Harner, Director of Golf for French Lick, gives us a tour of the golf properties, telling us about the early work of Tom Bendelow, Donald Ross and, of late, the new Pete Dye course. The Villages of Tullymore is a $15 million home and condo development at the Tullymore Golf Course site. Mecosa L.L.C purchased the Tullymore and St. Ives properties from Canadian Lakes Development Co. earlier in the year for $15 million. The Villages at Tullymore will build out to 340 homes and condos with a 13,000 square-foot clubhouse and a new 13 acre lake.GM Kevin O'Brien is obviously excited about the project and shares his thoughts with us. Susan and Paul Bairley contribute to the fun with their observations and videography. In this show, the European team is introduced and a portion of the opening ceremonies is shown. http://youtube.com/watch?v=KSf4ZR-VdLk ***** The Retreat at Grand Haven Golf Course-with John Rooney and Jerry Matthews The folks at the Grand Haven Golf Club are adding some single dwelling homes to the course. The former driving range and a re-arrangement of a couple of the holes have allowed for the needed land. This W. Bruce Matthews designed course, with occasional tweaking by son, Jerry, is one of Michigan's treasures. Our hosts for the video are John Rooney and Jerry Matthews. Rooney and his family purchased Grand Haven in the late 90's and have erected a new clubhouse, put in a new irrigation system, upgraded the entire golf course and now are turning their attention to this new project. You can catch all of the excitement at http://youtube.com/watch?v=vGPTxFDXBQE Also, Dan Rooney, son of John, was the inspiration for the "Fallen Heroes Memorial" that the PGA and many golf associations participated in this September. The event raised more than a million dollars for scholarships. They will shift the date to the Memorial Day weekend this year. http://www.fallenheroesmemorial.com ***** Crystal Mountain Resort's Elite Junior Golf School-Brad Dean and Jennie McCafferty This summer we had a chance to visit with Brad Dean and members of his Crystal Mountain Resort instructional team. Dean and members of his staff have annually received national and state acclaim in lists of top instructors. Of late, his reputation has been enhanced by the establishment of an Elite Golf School. The young guns of today and the stars of tomorrow have been congregating at Crystal for the past few years.. This year, some of those students included Michigan Amateur Champion, MSU's Ryan Brehm and past Michigan Amateur Champion and now golf professional, EMU's Korey Mahoney. http://youtube.com/watch?v=cCdQ6WsjfOs ***** Eagle Eye Golf Course-Pete Dye, Chris Lutzke, Paul Albanese and Jack Berry We had the chance to chat with some great golf architects at the Grand Opening of Eagle Eye Golf Course. The video footage had been gathering some dust in our vaults, so we thought it was time to bring it online. Jack Berry had the delightful task of interviewing the renown Pete Dye, who mentored course architect Chirs Lutzke for a couple of decades. Chirs Lutzke has partnered up with Paul Albanese and the two of them are busy on a number of projects, one being the Sweetgrasses course near Escanaba. Chris Lutzke is still working some with Pete Dye and is on site at the new Dye course in French Lick. http://youtube.com/watch?v=xP8GwAh6SIM ***** Masters Memories Achievement Award Fourteen members of the media were honored at a 2007 Masters Memories Achievement Award ceremony. The Masters ticket is not only hard to come by for consumers, it also attracts such heavy interest from journalists, that media credentials are rare and tough to get as well. Our show captures the memories of golf writers who have been covering the Masters for 40 or more years. You can find the total list and write ups of the honorees on the Masters site at http://masters.org/en_US/news/articles/2007-04-04/200704041175714008859.html Our video features, John Derr, who has covered the Masters the longest, 62 years, Dan Jenkins, Dave Kindred, Hubert Mizell, Nick Seitz, Art Spander and Al Wester.
